Inheritance
Inheritance is the process by which properties are passed from parent to child elements even though those properties have not been explicitly defined by other means. Certain properties are inherited automatically, and as the name implies, a child element will take on the characteristics of its parent with regards to these properties.
The box model can be applied to all elements of a web page. Using the box model rules in css style this paragraph in your web page so that it stands out and shows off the use of the box model.

Finding Useful Resources
Although the web is a fantastic source of useful learning material, doing a general search for topics like "HTML5" or "CSS" can be a bit unsatisfactory. You get back millions of results, that may not really reflect your interests or intentions. Social Search is a general term for an alternative to the main search engines, which can produce more effective results for some types of query. StumbleUpon is a good example of this type of search - essentially this service lets you explore the web based on your interests, but also based on feedback about sites gathered from other users of the service. If you want to learn more, sign up now, and see what you find. In particular - set your interests to just "Web Development" - and nothing (for the moment). See if you can start to make sense of some of the sites you are presented with. For instance, here is a list of sites you are likely to "stumble upon" quite quickly - sites which could be very useful as you work on your project:
- CSS Cheat Sheet - very handy resource to print out and keep as you are learning CSS
- A Web Development Course - a bit like our course, complete with slides and podcasts
- Shapes in CSS - not very useful yet, but you never know
- Font Tester - a useful site for understanding the visualising the various font options in CSS
- Article - not very technical, but an opinion you might find interesting.
All the the above sites were located fairly quickly - however the search was limited just to "Web Development". See what you can find.
File Transfer Protocol
For homework this week, you were asked to set up a hosting account with zymic. Zymic uses FTP (file transfer protocol) to transfer files from your local computer to your Zymic hosting account.Filezilla is the open source FTP software that we will be using. For more information on Filezilla, click on the Filezilla logo. If you want to see what other open source software is available for download, the Source Forge website is a very good reference.
In this weeks class you are learning to include and manipulate images that we have provided to you. When using images from the Internet you should be aware of who owns the images and if you are allowed under copyright laws to re-use or alter them. Creative Commons provides a way for people to share their work, be it an image, music, book or video through a creative commons licence. Try searching for images using Google that have a creative commons licence. (This is done in the advanced search options in Google's image search).
A Culture of Sharing
Creative Commons is building a culture of sharing. By allowing your work to be available to millions of other creators on the web, you might be responsible for the next big thing. Find content you can share, use and remix.
The Creative Commons copyright licenses and tools forge a balance inside the traditional “all rights reserved” setting that copyright law creates. Our tools give everyone from individual creators to large companies and institutions a simple, standardized way to grant copyright permissions to their creative work. The combination of our tools and our users is a vast and growing digital commons, a pool of content that can be copied, distributed, edited, remixed, and built upon, all within the boundaries of copyright law.

Welcome
Welcome to the Web Development 2011 blog. This site is designed to be a used in the Web Development Labs as a source of content for some simple exercises you will be asked to do. Essentially, we will put up one or two posts here each week, and ask you to copy this into a replica of this site as an exercise getting acquainted with the basics of HTML.
The term ''Information Graphics" or 'infographics' refers to a visual representation of data or knowledge, sometimes complex knowledge, that is hard to convey easily in text. Wikipedia article here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Information_graphics. In this weeks class you will have seen an information graphic on the evolution of the web - taken from this site here: http://evolutionofweb.appspot.com/. See if you can find a few others related to the the web, html and the internet in general, and insert them into your own replica of this site.
